Nuance & Usage

影響 refers to the influence or effect one thing has on another. 影響を与える (to give influence, to affect), 影響を受ける (to receive influence, to be affected), 影響が出る (an effect appears), 悪影響 (bad influence), 良い影響 (good influence) are common collocations. The verb form 影響する (to influence) is also used: 気候が農業に影響する (climate affects agriculture). 影響力 (eikyouryoku — influence, power to affect) is the noun for "influencing power," as in 影響力のある人 (an influential person).

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes confuse 影響 with 効果 (kouka — effect, result, effectiveness) and 結果 (kekka — result, outcome). 影響 focuses on causal impact from one thing on another; 効果 refers to the effectiveness or intended result of an action; 結果 is the outcome of a process. 影響を与える and 影響を及ぼす (to exert influence) are both correct, but the latter is more formal. Don't say 影響をする — use 影響を与える or 影響する.
