Meaning

exam; test; examination

Formality

Nuance & Usage

試験 is the standard word for an exam or test, used in academic and professional contexts. Common expressions: 試験を受ける (take an exam), 試験に合格する (pass an exam), 試験に落ちる/不合格 (fail an exam), 試験勉強 (studying for an exam). Note: 試験 is more formal/official than テスト (tesuto — casual for a classroom quiz/test). JLPT is called 日本語能力試験 (Nihongo Nouryoku Shiken). 入学試験 (nyuugaku shiken) is an entrance examination.

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes confuse 試験を受ける (to take an exam) with 試験をする (to give/administer an exam — what the teacher does). The student 受ける; the school/institution 行う or する. Also: 試験に合格する (pass) vs 試験に受かる (pass — slightly more casual), and 試験に落ちる (fail — casual) vs 試験に不合格になる (fail — formal). The JLPT is referred to as 能力試験 or simply JLPT among learners.
