バス is the standard word for bus, borrowed from English. Common expressions: バスに乗る (board the bus), バスを降りる (get off the bus), バス停 (basutei — bus stop), バス代 (basudai — bus fare). In Japan, buses are often used in areas where train coverage is limited. Note: バス is also used for charter buses (観光バス — kankou basu — sightseeing bus) and school buses (スクールバス).
Common Mistakes
Learners confuse バス停 (basutei — bus stop) with 駅 (eki — train station). Also, the particle usage is the same as with trains: バスに乗る (get on the bus — に) vs. バスで行く (go by bus — で). A common mixing-up: 何番のバス？ asks "which number bus?" — useful for numbered bus routes in Japan.
