充実する
じゅうじつする·juujitsu suru
Meaning
to be fulfilling; to be enriched; to be substantial
Nuance & Usage
充実する describes a state of being full, rich, and satisfying. 充実した生活 (juujitsu shita seikatsu) means 'a fulfilling life.' 充実感 (juujitsukan) means 'a sense of fulfillment.' It can also be used for things: 設備が充実している means 'the facilities are well-equipped.' The word carries a very positive connotation of being content and productive.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 充実 with 満足 (manzoku — satisfaction). 充実 emphasizes that something is rich, full, and productive, while 満足 simply means being satisfied. A day can be 充実した (fulfilling and productive) even if you're tired. Also note: 充実した (past form as adjective) is very common — 充実した毎日 (fulfilling daily life).
