発見する means to discover or find something, especially something previously unknown or hidden. 大発見 (daihakken) means 'a great discovery.' 新種の発見 (shinshu no hakken) means 'discovery of a new species.' Unlike 見つける (mitsukeru — to find), which is more casual and can mean finding everyday lost items, 発見する has a more significant, often academic or scientific connotation.
Common Mistakes
Learners often use 発見する and 見つける interchangeably. While both mean 'to find,' 発見する implies discovering something new or significant, while 見つける is more general and casual. You would say 鍵を見つけた (found the key) but 新しい星を発見した (discovered a new star). Using 発見する for trivial findings sounds unnatural.
