Nuance & Usage
経済 refers to the economy of a country or region, or the academic field of economics. 経済成長 (keizai seichou) means 'economic growth.' 経済的 (keizaiteki) is a na-adjective meaning 'economical' or 'financially.' 日本経済 (nihon keizai) means 'the Japanese economy.' It also has a practical meaning — 経済的な車 means 'an economical car' (fuel-efficient, cost-effective).
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 経済的 meaning 'related to the economy' with 'economical/cost-effective.' Both meanings exist, but context determines which. 経済的な理由 usually means 'financial reasons,' while 経済的な方法 means 'an economical method.' Don't confuse 経済 with 金融 (kin'yuu — finance/banking), which is more specific to financial institutions.
