見解
けんかい·kenkai
Meaning
view; opinion; position; perspective; interpretation
Nuance & Usage
見解 is a formal word for one's considered opinion or interpretation of something. 政府見解 (government's position), 公式見解 (official stance), 見解を述べる (to state one's view), 見解の相違 (difference of opinion) are common expressions. Unlike 意見 (iken — opinion, general), 見解 implies a more carefully formed, authoritative perspective — often used by experts, officials, or institutions. 見解が分かれる (opinions differ) is a very useful academic and journalistic phrase.
Common Mistakes
Learners confuse 見解 with 意見 (iken — opinion, casual/general), 立場 (tachiba — position/stance, context-based), and 考え (kangae — thought, idea). 見解 is the most formal and implies a well-reasoned, often publicly stated position. 見解を示す (to indicate a view) and 見解を求める (to ask for someone's view) are formal patterns. 見解の相違 (a difference of opinion/interpretation) is a standard expression in formal discussions. Avoid using 見解 in casual conversation — say 意見 instead.
