インターネット refers to the internet. It is often abbreviated as ネット (netto) in casual speech: ネットで調べる (look something up online), ネット通販 (netto tsuuhan — online shopping), ネット銀行 (internet banking). Common phrases: インターネットに接続する (connect to the internet), インターネットで注文する (order online), インターネット環境 (internet environment/connectivity). Wi-Fi is ワイファイ and very widely used in Japan.
Common Mistakes
In casual Japanese, ネット is far more common than the full form インターネット in spoken contexts. When used as a modifier, ネットで (using the internet) takes the particle で as it marks the means: ネットで買い物する (shop online). Learners sometimes say ネットに調べる (wrong particle) instead of ネットで調べる.
