Unlike 頑張る (ganbaru — to do one's best), which is more casual and emotional, 努力する emphasizes consistent, disciplined work over time.
Common Mistakes
Learners often use 努力する and 頑張る interchangeably. While similar, 努力する implies long-term, sustained effort, while 頑張る is more of an in-the-moment encouragement. 努力します sounds like a serious commitment, while 頑張ります is a lighter, more casual promise.
