パソコン is a contraction of パーソナルコンピューター (personal computer). In modern usage it often refers to both desktop and laptop computers. Common expressions: パソコンを使う (use a PC), パソコンが壊れた (the PC broke down), パソコン作業 (PC work), パソコンのスキル (computer skills). 持ち運べるパソコン is a laptop (also ノートパソコン — notebook PC). In professional settings, PC skills are called パソコンスキル or IT スキル.
Common Mistakes
Note: パソコン = personal computer (desktop or laptop); スマートフォン/スマホ = smartphone. These are distinct in Japanese. A common phrasing issue: パソコンで仕事をする (work using a PC — で marks the tool), not パソコンに仕事をする. Also: パソコンが苦手 (not good with computers) is an extremely common expression in Japan, especially among older generations. Don't confuse ノートパソコン (laptop) with タブレット (tablet).
