Nuance & Usage
期待する expresses anticipation or hope that something good will happen. 期待に応える (kitai ni kotaeru) means 'to meet expectations.' 期待外れ (kitai hazure) means 'a disappointment.' 期待を裏切る (kitai wo uragiru) means 'to betray expectations.' Unlike 楽しみにする (tanoshimi ni suru — to look forward to), which is purely positive, 期待する can carry pressure — 期待されている means others are counting on you.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 期待する with 予想する (yosou suru — to predict/forecast). 期待する has a hopeful, emotional element (wanting something good to happen), while 予想する is neutral prediction. Also, be careful: 期待しないでください doesn't just mean 'don't expect it' — it can come across as 'don't get your hopes up,' which might sound negative.
