反対する
はんたいする·hantai suru
Meaning
to oppose; to object; to be against
Nuance & Usage
反対する means to disagree with or oppose something. 反対意見 (hantai iken) means 'opposing opinion.' 反対側 (hantai gawa) means 'the opposite side' (physically). 反対 can also function as a noun or na-adjective meaning 'opposite.' 反対に (hantai ni) means 'on the contrary.' It pairs naturally with 賛成する (sansei suru — to agree) in discussions and votes.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse the verb use 反対する (to oppose) with the adjective/noun use 反対 (opposite). 反対の方向 means 'the opposite direction,' while 計画に反対する means 'to oppose the plan.' The particle に is used for the target: 〜に反対する. Don't say 反対を — use 反対に or 反対する.
