Nuance & Usage
伴う means that one thing comes along with another, often used for consequences or associated factors. 危険を伴う (kiken wo tomonau) means 'to involve danger.' 痛みを伴う means 'to be accompanied by pain.' に伴い/に伴って (ni tomonai/ni tomonatte) is a grammar pattern meaning 'along with' or 'as ~ happens.' It is commonly used in formal writing and news. Unlike 一緒に (issho ni — together), 伴う implies a causal or inherent connection.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes struggle with the grammar pattern に伴って (ni tomonatte). It means 'along with' or 'as a result of' and connects two related changes: 人口の増加に伴って交通量も増えた (As the population increased, traffic volume also increased). Don't confuse 伴う with 含む (fukumu — to include/contain). 伴う implies a natural consequence or accompaniment, while 含む means something is included within.
