設備
せつび·setsubi
Meaning
equipment; facilities; installations
Nuance & Usage
設備 refers to the equipment, facilities, or infrastructure installed in a building or organization. 設備投 (setsubi toushi) means 'capital investment' (investing in equipment). 設備が整っている (setsubi ga totonotte iru) means 'to be well-equipped.' It typically refers to permanent or semi-permanent installations like air conditioning, laboratory equipment, factory machinery, or building infrastructure. Unlike 道具 (dougu — tools), 設備 refers to larger-scale equipment.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 設備 with 機器 (kiki — devices/apparatus) or 道具 (dougu — tools). 設備 refers to installed facilities and infrastructure (HVAC, plumbing, lab equipment), while 機器 refers to individual devices, and 道具 are handheld tools. Also, don't confuse 設備 with 施設 (shisetsu — facility/institution), which refers to the entire building or complex, not just the equipment inside.
