逸脱する

いつだつする·itsudatsu suru

FormalityFormal

Meaning

to deviate; to depart from; to stray from; to transgress; to go off track

Nuance & Usage

逸脱する means to stray from an established norm, rule, standard, or expected path. 規範から逸脱する (to deviate from the norm), 議題から逸脱する (to stray from the agenda), 逸脱行為 (deviant behavior) are typical uses. In formal and academic contexts, 逸脱 often implies a violation of expected standards — it can be neutral (creative deviation from convention) or negative (transgression of rules). The noun 逸脱 itself is commonly used: 規則からの逸脱 (deviation from rules), 逸脱の程度 (the degree of deviation).

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes confuse 逸脱する with 外れる (hazureru — to miss the mark, to fall off, more casual) and はみ出す (hamidasu — to stick out/overflow, more physical). 逸脱する is formal and implies a meaningful, often deliberate or problematic, departure from a standard. 議題から逸脱する (to stray off-topic) is very natural in meeting contexts. 社会規範からの逸脱 (deviation from social norms) appears frequently in academic sociology and law.
