必要だ expresses necessity and requirement. It is often used with が必要だ and 〜する必要がある. In formal writing, 必要があります is common.
Common Mistakes
Learners may confuse 必要だ and 大切だ. 必要だ means required, while 大切だ means important/valuable. Something can be important but not strictly required.
