地図

ちず·chizu

FormalityNeutral

Meaning

map; chart

Nuance & Usage

地図 refers to any type of map, from paper maps to digital map apps. Common expressions: 地図を見る (look at a map), 地図を描く (draw a map), 地図アプリ (map app). In the digital age, スマホの地図 or 地図アプリ (Google マップなど) are commonly used. 地図帳 (chizuchou) is an atlas. 天気図 (tenkizu) is a weather map. Note: for a floor plan, 見取り図 (mitorizu) is used instead.

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes use 地図 to mean the physical act of directions, but 地図 is the object (the map itself). For giving/asking directions, use 道を教える (michi o oshieru — to give directions) or 案内する (annai suru — to guide/direct). The sentence 地図を描いてもらえますか? (Could you draw me a map?) is a natural way to ask someone to sketch directions.
