Nuance & Usage
評価する means to judge the value, quality, or worth of something. 高く評価する (takaku hyouka suru) means 'to rate highly' or 'to appreciate greatly.' 評価基準 (hyouka kijun) means 'evaluation criteria.' In business, 人事評価 (jinji hyouka) means 'personnel evaluation.' It can be positive (appreciating someone's work) or neutral (objectively assessing).
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes use 評価する only in a negative or testing sense, but it is equally used for positive appreciation. 彼の努力を高く評価する means 'I highly appreciate his efforts.' Don't confuse with 批判する (hihan suru — to criticize), which is only negative. Also, 評価 as a noun can mean both 'evaluation' and 'reputation' — 評価が高い means 'highly regarded.'
