Nuance & Usage
実現する means to bring something from the realm of ideas or dreams into reality. 夢を実現する (to realize one's dream), 計画を実現する (to realize a plan), 目標が実現する (a goal comes true) are typical expressions. 実現可能 (jitsugen kanou — feasible, achievable) and 実現不可能 (not feasible) are used in project planning. Unlike 達成する (tasssei suru — to achieve/accomplish, usually goals with effort), 実現する emphasizes something abstract or hoped-for becoming real. 夢の実現 (dream realization) is a very motivational phrase.
Common Mistakes
Learners often confuse 実現する with 達成する (tasssei suru — to accomplish/achieve through effort) and 成就する (jouju suru — to fulfill/accomplish, more formal/literary). 実現する focuses on something becoming reality; 達成する emphasizes the effort of accomplishment. 夢が実現した (the dream came true) is the most natural phrasing — not 夢を達成した (which would mean you accomplished the dream task, less natural). Also note: both 実現する (transitive/intransitive) forms exist: 夢を実現する vs 夢が実現する.
