印象 refers to the mental image or feeling one gets from a person, place, or event. 第一印象 (daiichi inshou) means 'first impression.' 印象的 (inshouteki) is a na-adjective meaning 'impressive/memorable.' 印象に残る (inshou ni nokoru) means 'to leave an impression.' 印象を与える (inshou wo ataeru) means 'to give an impression.' It is a very common word in both casual and formal contexts.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes say 印象を持つ, but the more natural expressions are 印象を受ける (to receive an impression) or 印象に残る (to remain in one's impression). For giving impressions, use 印象を与える. Don't confuse 印象 with 感想 (kansou — thoughts/review). 印象 is the spontaneous feeling you get, while 感想 is a more considered opinion or feedback.
