Nuance & Usage
注目する means to direct one's attention toward something or to attract others' attention. 新技術に注目する (to pay attention to new technology), 注目を集める (to attract attention, to be in the spotlight), 世界が注目している (the world is watching), 注目の選手 (a player drawing attention) are common expressions. 要注目 (youichuumoku — worth paying attention to) is used in media and marketing. 注目度 (chuumoku-do — degree of attention/interest) is used in analytics. Unlike 観察する (to observe carefully), 注目する can be brief and pointed.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 注目する with 注意する (chuui suru — to be careful/cautious, or to warn) and 集中する (shuuchuu suru — to concentrate). 注目する is specifically about directing or attracting attention/gaze, not general caution (注意). 注目してください (Please pay attention/look here) is a polite request. 注目を浴びる (to be in the spotlight, to receive much attention) is an important idiom. The particle is に: 〜に注目する (to pay attention to ~).
