JLPT N4NounSchool

授業

じゅぎょう·jugyou

Meaning

class; lesson; lecture; teaching

Formality
Neutral

Nuance & Usage

授業 refers to a class or lesson at school or in a learning context. Common expressions: 授業を受ける (attend a class), 授業をする/教える (teach a class), 授業に遅れる (be late for class), 授業をサボる (skip class — casual), 授業料 (jugyouryou — tuition fee). Different from 勉強 (self-study): 授業 is structured learning with a teacher, while 勉強 is any study effort. 課外授業 (extra-curricular lesson/field trip) is also common.

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes use 授業 and 勉強 interchangeably, but they have different nuances. 授業を受ける = to take/attend a class (teacher-led). 勉強する = to study (self-directed). You can say 授業の後で勉強します (I'll study after class). Also: 授業 is not the same as 講義 (kougi — university lecture), though they overlap — 授業 is the more general term used from elementary school through university.
