Meaning
to solve; to resolve; to settle; to work out
Nuance & Usage
解決する means to solve a problem or resolve a situation. 問題を解決する (to solve a problem) is the most common usage. 解決策 (kaiketsusaku — solution) and 解決に向けて (toward a resolution) are frequently used in formal and business contexts. 解決済み (kaiketsu-zumi — already resolved, solved) appears in ticket systems and customer service. The word implies bringing something to a clean, complete conclusion — not just addressing but fully resolving the issue.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 解決する with 処理する (shori suru — to process/deal with) or 対処する (taisho suru — to handle/cope with). 解決する specifically means reaching a final resolution, not just managing or dealing with. 問題が解決した (the problem was resolved) vs 問題に対処した (dealt with the problem) — the former implies completion. Also note: 解決 takes を: 問題を解決する (not に in most cases).
