環境

かんきょう·kankyou

FormalityNeutral

Meaning

environment; surroundings; circumstances; setting

Nuance & Usage

環境 has two key meanings: (1) the natural environment (自然環境 — the natural world, ecology), and (2) one's living/working surroundings or circumstances. Common expressions: 環境問題 (environmental issues), 環境に優しい (eco-friendly), 生活環境 (living environment), 職場環境 (work environment), 学習環境 (learning environment). Japan has 環境省 (Ministry of the Environment). The concept of 環境に配慮する (showing consideration for the environment) is increasingly important in Japanese society.

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes confuse 環境 (environment/surroundings) with 自然 (shizen — nature). 自然 specifically refers to the natural world (forests, mountains, animals); 環境 is broader and includes both natural and man-made surroundings. Example: 自然を守る (protect nature) vs 環境を守る (protect the environment — could include air quality, urban spaces, etc.). Both are used for environmental topics but with different nuances.
