Nuance & Usage
値段 is the everyday word for the price of something. It is often used with: 値段が高い/安い (expensive/cheap price), 値段をつける (set a price), 値段を聞く (ask the price), 値段が分からない (don't know the price). In more formal/business contexts, 価格 (kakaku) is preferred. 定価 (teika) means list price/fixed price, while 実売価格 (jitsubai kakaku) is the actual selling price. Note: 値引き (nebiki) is a price reduction/markdown from a seller's perspective.
Common Mistakes
Learners confuse 値段 (nedan — everyday word for price) with 価格 (kakaku — price in business/formal context) and 料金 (ryoukin — fee/charge for a service). 値段 is used for goods; 料金 for services (taxi fare, electricity bill, admission fee). Example: この服の値段はいくらですか? (goods) vs バスの料金はいくらですか? (service). Don't say 値段がない for "free" — say 無料 (muryou) or ただ (tada).
