試着する
しちゃくする·shichaku suru
Meaning
to try on (clothing); to have a fitting
Nuance & Usage
試着する means to try on clothes or shoes before purchasing. The noun form 試着 (shichaku) is used in 試着室 (shichaku-shitsu — fitting room/changing room). The polite request: 試着してもいいですか? (May I try this on?) is essential for shopping. In Japan, many stores keep fitting rooms staffed or have attendants to help manage them. 試乗する (shijou suru) is the equivalent for test-driving a vehicle. 試食する (shishoku suru) is tasting/sampling food.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes don't know to ask 試着していいですか? before going into a fitting room — in Japan this is standard courtesy to ask shop staff. Also: 着てみる (kite miru — to try wearing) is the more casual verb form; 試着する sounds more formal/retail. Don't confuse 試着室 (fitting room) with トイレ (bathroom) — a real beginner mistake! The -してみる pattern (-shite miru — to try doing) is a useful grammar pattern here.
