注文する

ちゅうもんする·chuumon suru

Meaning

to order; to place an order; to request

Formality
Neutral

Nuance & Usage

注文する means to order food at a restaurant, or to order/request a product or service. Common expressions: 注文を取る (take an order — what the staff does), 注文する (place an order — what the customer does), 注文が通る (order goes through), 注文を間違える (mess up an order). In restaurants: ご注文はお決まりですか? (Have you decided on your order?) is the standard server phrase. Online: 商品を注文する (order a product online).

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes confuse 注文する (order at the moment of consumption or purchase) with 予約する (yoyaku suru — reserve in advance). 注文する is for placing an immediate order (at a restaurant, online shop); 予約する is for reserving ahead of time (a hotel, a seat). Also: don't confuse ご注文 (honorific — used by staff) with 注文 (plain — used by customer). In a restaurant, you say 注文お願いします (I'd like to order).
