交渉する

こうしょうする·koushou suru

Meaning

to negotiate; to bargain

Formality
Formal

Nuance & Usage

交渉する means to discuss terms and try to reach an agreement. 交渉力 (koushouryoku) means 'negotiation skills.' 交渉の余地がある (koushou no yochi ga aru) means 'there is room for negotiation.' 価格交渉 (kakaku koushou) is 'price negotiation.' It is primarily used in business and formal contexts. Unlike 相談する (soudan suru — to consult), 交渉 implies each side has different interests and is trying to reach a compromise.

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes confuse 交渉する with 相談する (soudan suru — to consult/discuss). 相談 is cooperative and seeks advice, while 交渉 involves competing interests and compromise. The particle pattern is 〜と交渉する (to negotiate with ~) or 〜について交渉する (to negotiate about ~). Don't use に for the counterpart — use と.
