Nuance & Usage
成長する refers to growth in a broad sense — physical growth of children, personal development, or growth of a business/economy. 成長期 (seichouki) means 'growth period.' 人として成長する means 'to grow as a person.' Unlike 育つ (sodatsu — to be raised/grow up), which is more about the process of being nurtured, 成長する emphasizes the result of becoming bigger, stronger, or more mature.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 成長する with 育てる (sodateru — to raise/nurture). 成長する is intransitive (the subject grows), while 育てる is transitive (someone raises/nurtures another). Also, 成長 can be used for abstract growth (skills, personality) more naturally than 大きくなる, which is mainly physical.
