表現する means to express thoughts, feelings, or ideas through words, art, or actions. 表現力 (hyougenryoku) means 'expressive ability.' 自己表現 (jiko hyougen) means 'self-expression.' 表現方法 (hyougen houhou) means 'method of expression.' It covers a wide range — verbal expression, artistic expression, facial expression (表情 is a related word). Unlike 言う (iu — to say), 表現する emphasizes the manner and quality of communication.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 表現する with 説明する (setsumei suru — to explain). 表現する is about how you convey or express something (creatively, artistically), while 説明する is about logically explaining something. Also, 表現 as a noun means 'expression' — 日本語の表現 means 'Japanese expressions.' Don't confuse with 表情 (hyoujou — facial expression).
