Nuance & Usage
尊敬する means to deeply respect or admire someone. The noun form 尊敬 (sonkei) is used in: 尊敬する人 (person you respect), 尊敬の念 (sense of respect/admiration), 尊敬語 (sonkei-go — honorific language in Japanese, literally "respect language"). This is also the name for one of the keigo categories. Compare with 敬う (uyamau — to revere/honor, more classical), and 崇拝する (souhai suru — to worship/idolize, stronger). 尊重する (sonchou suru) means to show respect for/value something (like opinions or rights).
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 尊敬する (to personally respect/admire a person) with 尊重する (sonchou suru — to value/show respect for something, like a rule or opinion). 私は先生を尊敬しています (I respect my teacher — person). 人の意見を尊重する (to respect/value people's opinions — more abstract).
