割引 means a discount or price reduction. The verb form is 割引する (to discount) or 割り引く (waribiku — to give a discount). Common expressions: 割引券 (waribiki-ken — discount coupon), 学割 (gakuwari — student discount), 割引価格 (waribiki kakaku — discounted price), 三割引き (san-wari-biki — 30% off). Note: in Japanese, percentages of discounts are often expressed as 割 (wari): 一割 = 10%, 二割 = 20%, etc. 半額 (hangaku) means half price.
Common Mistakes
Learners sometimes confuse 割引 (discount/reduction from original price) with セール (sale — a sale event) or 安売り (yasuurI — selling cheaply). You would say 割引があります (there is a discount) or 割引してもらえますか？ (Could you give me a discount?). Note: the expression 〇割引 uses a Japanese counting system — 一割引き = 10% off, 三割引き = 30% off — which is different from the percentage system and confuses many learners.
