涼しい

すずしい·suzushii

FormalityNeutral

Meaning

cool; refreshingly cool; pleasantly cool

Nuance & Usage

涼しい describes a pleasantly cool temperature — not cold, but comfortably cool, usually as relief from heat. It is typically used for outdoor weather: 今日は涼しい (today is nicely cool). It contrasts with 寒い (samui — cold/unpleasantly cold) on one side and 暑い (atsui — hot) on the other. 涼しい suggests comfort; 寒い suggests discomfort. Figuratively: 涼しい顔をする (to act cool/unaffected, literally "to show a cool face").

Common Mistakes

Learners confuse 涼しい (pleasantly cool) with 寒い (samui — uncomfortably cold). In Japanese, 涼しい is used when the temperature drops in autumn and feels refreshing, while 寒い is for genuinely cold weather that you want to escape from. Don't say 今日は涼しい when it is actually freezing — use 寒い. Also: for indoors cooling (air conditioning), 冷たい (tsumetai — cold/chilly to touch) is used for objects, not 涼しい.
